Gay and Lesbian theater, much like the movement itself, has evolved over time. What was once used almost mockingly used in films and plays is now one the most influential stories. Like other type of theaters, it allowed this community to express the social problems that it faces on a day to day basis.Over time there has to be some break through allowed in the community in order for the theatre to progress as well. The play Boys in the Band helped open the door for a lot more confessional drams in that community. In plays prior to the creation of Gay and Lesbian theaters, being characterized as gay and/or lesbian was meant to be flamboyant or just something Bad. The roll was meant to be taken a joke, never anything serious or even encouraged. But as time progressed, members of this community were able to openly express themselves and shed light on the community like never before through plays. Playwrights began using their voice to shed light on the matters that impacted this community. They talked about things that people didn't want to acknowledge. Over time there have been many additions to this theater. Organizations have been made in order to give many playwrights an opportunity to perform their pieces, because most had trouble getting funding for their programs and plays. These organizations are continuing to expand and bring more recognition to the LGBT community and breaking many negative stereotypes along the way. Over time people are starting to acknowledge this community and what all people in it have to offer. If it weren't for plays like the Normal Heart and shedding light on the AIDS Epidemic, I don't think it would have gotten the attention it did. I think this theatre is not only paving ways for playwrights, but it is paving ways for it's community.
